2014 INREM National Conference
2014NC

Organized by:

The 2014 National Conference on INREM is the first conference of the Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (IdSC-INREM) last October 16-17, 2014. It has the theme of "Learning Lessons, Sharing Knowledge: Strengthening  the role of INREM in Sustainable Development"
The Philippines’s natural resources and environment remain to be under enormous threat. Here are the facts in the last two decades:

  • Forests have continued to decline due to small-scale illegal logging, an important source of livelihood for many upland communities.
  • Watersheds have deteriorated as a result of population pressures, putting a lot of stress on the soil and water resources, including the forest cover.
  • The Philippines is regarded as one of the critical hotspots, with more than 800 of its plant and animal species threatened with extinction.
  • As forest cover dwindles, soil erosion worsens leading to downstream siltation of rivers, lakes, reservoirs, coastal and marine ecosystems.
  • Most rivers and lakes are highly polluted with settlements and industries dumping organic matter, chemical and heavy metal pollutants into them, contributing to declining fish productivity.
  • Most of the coral reef areas in the country, the second largest in Southeast Asia, are suffering from overexploitation due to the rapid growth of population in coastal areas.
  • Many mangrove forests in the Philippines have suffered from massive conversion into fishponds.
In attempting to provide solutions to the degradation across landscapes, a piece meal approach to problem analysis and solving will not be effective. The appropriate approach is to holistically look at the direct and indirect drivers of resources degradation and how these drivers can be dealt with through integrated solutions.
