The project team members of the APN-funded project “Resilience-building and Future-proofing Strategies in a Multi-stressed Scenario in the Province of Albay, Philippines” conducted its face-to-face joint workshop to discuss the possible outputs of the projects and ways forward. Held last June 22-23, 2023, it was attended by members of the project team from both UPLB-INREM and the UP Resilience Institute. It is also the first activity jointly conducted by the two institutions since UPLB-INREM’s affiliation with UPRI was approved by the UP Board of Regents.

Fruitful discussions on the project outputs transpired during the two-day workshop highlighting the synergies between the two institutions on participatory and probabilistic risk assessment; statistical analysis of the institutional capacity survey results; land cover change, forest fragmentation analysis and land cover hazard assessment; visualization of impacts; and capacity-building activities for the local stakeholders. The discussions emphasized the need for a breakthrough in climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster risk reduction and management to address multi-hazard and multi-stressed scenarios which are especially prevalent in the Province of Albay.

Progress has been achieved on these ends at the conclusion of the workshop. Presentation of results to the local stakeholders is slated for the second half of the year, and to the greater research community at the 4th International Conference on Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management in November 2023.

The resilience project in Albay is funded by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global change Research and implemented by the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management and the UP Resilience Institute together with the City Government of Ligao, DENR Region 5, and Bicol University.
