In a move that signals growing international cooperation in climate and environmental governance, the UPLB-Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UPLB-INREM) and the Embassy of Brazil discussed potential areas of collaboration in research, policy engagement, and knowledge sharing.
The meeting, held at the Embassy of Brazil’s office in Makati City, was attended by Brazilian Ambassador to Manila Gilberto Fonseca Guimarães de Moura; First Secretary Juan Oliveira Bomfim; Dr. Juan M. Pulhin, founding director of UPLB-INREM; and Beth Zaida Ugat and Kyle Singson, university researcher and university research associate, respectively, at UPLB-INREM.
During the dialogue, Dr. Pulhin presented UPLB-INREM’s institutional thrusts, including its upcoming flagship event, the 5th International Conference on Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (INREM 2025).
The Embassy of Brazil expressed strong interest in supporting and participating in the conference, including identifying possible Brazilian academic experts to contribute to thematic sessions.
In addition, the Embassy invited UPLB-INREM to participate in the Webinar Series on Science, Technology, and Innovation Diplomacy.
The proposed activities align closely with UPLB-INREM’s interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, especially in promoting nature-based solutions, sustainable bioproduction systems, and ecosystem-based climate adaptation.
As part of the collaboration, UPLB-INREM expects to propose a thematic entry point where the Embassy can provide technical or institutional support for INREM 2025, particularly in connecting with research institutions such as the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), National Institute for Space Research (INPE), and universities with strong environmental and climate science programs.
